My students need a large carpet to meet and work together on a daily basis for a variety of classroom community and instructional purposes.

My Students

They say, "Home is where the heart is." Well, in a school, the carpet is where the classroom is. We start each day on the carpet where we build our classroom community. We meet throughout the day for large- and small-group lessons, and it is also a space for students to work independently.

Our high-poverty school is a community of hard-working students, involved family members, and dedicated teachers.

My 5th-grade students come to school eager to learn. For many it is a home away from home where they can feel safe, be excited about their learning, and be part of a classroom community.

My Project

This classroom carpet will be used everyday for a variety of purposes. We will start each day gathering on the carpet to work on community building. We will meet in large and small groups for instruction in reading and math, as well as independent and partner work. The carpet space will provide a comfortable and welcoming area for students to improve their academic skills. The carpet I chose has a large, colorful 50-state map on it. My plan is to also use this to help them learn their state geography.

This bright classroom carpet would bring a sense of pride to their classroom environment.

Currently the carpet is old, stained, and trimmed in duct tape in order to stop it from unraveling. Starting their school year with a new, large, bright carpet on which all 25 students would be able to fit would make such a difference.
