My students need a carpet to hold our Class Council meetings, as well as a place to do some quiet reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Creating a community in the classroom is so very important. The kiddos that I serve tend to struggle with their communication and hence creating a community. Having a safe place (the carpet) to come together and learn necessary life-skills would be such a blessing.
My kiddos are primarily Hispanic and African-American.
They come from a rather impoverished neighborhood. I can't say enough about how wonderful my students are. They can be difficult but, that just makes those aha-moments even better. It is not uncommon for the life skills that we teach in the classroom to be the only exposure they ever truly get. This is why exposing them to healthy ways to problem solve is so very important.
Our school is a charter school and has been serving this community for almost 20years now. We are a k-8 center, while I personally teach 4th grade.
My Project
Our school holds morning meetings as well as a class council meeting once a week. This is where the class comes together as a community to discuss what they are doing well and what goals they wish to set for themselves for the following week. This is a student-run event and so important to their emotional development.
This carpet would give the kiddos a defined place to come and communicate with the rest of their peers.
Right now we don't have a dedicated location for meetings, the carpet would provide a defined space. I believe that this defined space would allow for us to crate a safe space where the kiddos can truly speak their minds. It would also add so much color and joy the classroom!
