Remember your excitement when the Sunday paper came and you got to read the "funnies"? Children love comics and are engaged when reading them. I'd like to engage my classroom with Comic books! Please help us fill our shelves with this wonderful genre.
I teach a class full of energetic, inquisitive ELL second graders in a small Texas town, in a high needs community.
Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. Their parents want the best education possible for them but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful kids with a wide variety of learning tools.
My Project
TOON books are the first high-quality comics designed for children. Each book in the collection is just right for reading for young children. Perhaps more remarkably, this is the first collection ever designed to offer early readers comics they can read themselves. My goal is to use the books as a springboard for literacy for students. We will offer the books to students to read during independent reading time, as well as small group reading time. The intent is that if students find books they enjoy, they'll read more, which will help them improve their reading skills!
The gap between readers and non-readers is growing all the time.
I need books that will spark the flame of literacy for students who are struggling. I believe these books could be just what my students need.
