Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember falling in love with your first great novel as a child? Many of the students in our school haven't yet had their first great adventure with a book that captures their imagination and takes them on a journey to another time or place. We want to give that experience to them!
This project will provide novels for all of our fourth grade students.
Our community is a close knit, small rural town. Many of our students have parents who work long hours in the fields to provide a better future for their children. A large number of our students do not have the luxury of having even a small library of books at home. Nonetheless, given the opportunity and exposure to a teacher's enthusiasm, they will begin the wondrous affair of falling in love with literature and all it has to offer. These are children that simply lack opportunities, not desire. Once they have shared some novels with the class, they will become eager to branch out on their own.
My Project
Given the ability to give each student in our grade level a copy of the novel at the same time, we will be able to give them a shared experience with literature. Beginning with Riding Freedom, students will take part in the life of a girl who makes her dreams come true by hiding her identity. They will be able to collaborate as they read and do group activities that help them imagine what it was like to live in a time when girls were not afforded the same opportunities as boys. Taking what they learn from this novel, they will be encouraged to read other novels about courageous people who forged the way for others to gain basic rights for those living in the US.
When we read The One and Only Ivan together, students will get caught up in the life of a gorilla who lives in a mall. Through their excitement in reading this book and finding out what happens to Ivan, students will be encouraged to read more about the true Ivan and how his life continued after the mall.
When students can share their learning by collaborating on a book and a project, it brings them closer together.
These two novels share the common threads of compassion and endurance-two characteristics we want our students to learn. Through these novels, we know our students will be captured by stories that will stay with them forever. They will foster their love of reading and begin them on the pathway of becoming lifelong readers.
