Capturing Character at Sequoyah

My students need a camera and 2 memory cards to help us document our clubs and service projects. This includes gardening club, running club and ballet, just to mention a few.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Tell me and I will forget; show and I may remember; involve me and understand. (Chinese Proverb) I want my students to be involved as much as possible through the various clubs before & after school and on weekends. We are teaching them about recycling, gardening, planting trees, cooking and much more.

Sequoyah students are AMAZING.

We are a low socioeconomic population, 100% free lunch. Many of our children experience violence at an early age, whether it is in the streets of the neighborhood or in the home. This violence often leads to intolerance at schools towards those outside of your own culture. Many of the children who leave our school have gang affiliations, which lead to incarcerations and drug use. This is a road they have seen past familial generations go down so the path comes full circle once more with the cycle never ending. However, this does not stop them from wanting to learn new and exciting things. Offering the clubs and activities gives them a safe place to be with hope for a future. Offering them the chance to document their amazing project could change their direction in life.

My Project

With the camera my students will be able to make a portfolio of all the amazing things they can accomplish. For the garden they can document how you are able to go from seed to table. They can do a video dairies of the preparation for the next race in running club. We would be able to include a picture portfolio of all the recycling projects. These are just a few of the things we can do.

As Nelson Mandela said, "When we allow our light to shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." By funding this project you will be giving my students permission to let their light shine.
