Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day I hear "Turn it up!" Would you be frustrated if your class was all about sound, yet you couldn't hear anything? So are my students!
My students attend a school that caters to all grades, kindergarten through eighth grade.
Because of our wide age range, our budget dollars must be stretched across that gap--which can mean making due for the older students, and being told "Don't touch that!" for the younger ones. We have a range of student abilities, also, from students who spend nearly all of their time in an isolated classroom, to students in the accelerated program; from students learning their second or even third language, to students proficient at reading and writing in kindergarten.
We are considered a high-poverty school because of our free/reduced lunch count, but our students all see each other as equals and friends which is quite amazing in such a diverse population! All students in our school have the opportunity to learn music, and it is my goal to give them access to the highest quality music I can. A new speaker system would perfectly complete our classroom set up.
My Project
With a new speaker system, we will be able to hear the music we are studying in our music classes. Students learning the difference between a saxophone and a clarinet will actually be able to hear that difference! Students learning to folk dance will be able to hear the music above the noise their feet makes while they dance. Students learning to play an instrument will be able to clearly hear and understand characteristic tone quality in order to emulate beautiful sound.
We were able to raise money for a classroom iPod.
It has made a difference in how we are able to function daily as a class. Now we are ready to amp up that sound by pumping it through a speaker worthy of the music we plan to make.
