As the elementary school media specialist for almost 900 students and 75 teachers, my role is to lead and model the integration of technology and 21st century skills into both academic and daily life with the same ease of use and familiarity as paper and pencil.
Our school is located in a small community within a facility that will be 50 years old next year.
Our community has been seriously impacted both economically and by the "brain drain" associated with the retirement of the Space Shuttle Program. The technology awareness, utilization, and access that were once abundant in the student homes of a more formally educated and highly skilled workforce community, has transitioned into an school district area with all Title I schools. Our school has an over 70% of the student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch, and sadly, 24 students classified as homeless.
My Project
The library media center is a shared space, the hub of the school with many activities happening at once. Therefore, headphones are needed so students are able to create academically stimulating projects while others are researching, reading quietly and other students may be checking in or out books. The headphones allow students who are on the computer to work quietly and not disturb other patrons.
My goal is for students to create academically stimulating projects with multiple platforms while continuously increasing their technology knowledge base, platform applications capabilities, and of most importantly, the critical thinking skills necessary to maneuver the world wide web safely in both the academic and real world.
I strive for my students to gain not only the knowledge, but the self confidence, motivation, and safety awareness and discipline to learn independently.
