Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each year I envision the wonderful work we'll do in our English class. I see us reading, writing, conversing, and in our own way, changing lives. By the end of each school year, I hope to introduce the students to themselves. Hopefully, they will see what great strides they've made all year.
My students are wild, wacky, and wonderful.
They have the kind of appropriate energy that makes learning and teaching an adventure. They are from diverse cultural backgrounds and in our room, they all make room for each other while trying to understand each others' differences. Any given day you will find my kids trying to listen to music through their earphones, talking about the upcoming weekend, or seeing who can make the class laugh the most. They are discovering who they are and deciding who they want to be. My hope is to add some flavor to their already colorful lives by showing them that art (in the form of literature) imitates life. They do need direction and they crave inspiration.
My Project
At times, we may read something in class that some of the kids like, but some of them don't. Some kids are engaged and active readers and others feel uncomfortable reading academic language. With the resources that we'll receive through DonorsChoose, students in my class will have the chance to actively participate in reading parts from Twelve Angry Men. This will give us so many opportunities to look at humanity through the eyes of fictional characters who could (quite easily) be any of us. We will focus on civic duty, tolerance, addressing racial biases, and looking at what it takes to have character and integrity in the face of intimidation. Students will have a chance to consider the worth of human life and the importance of sacrificing time and energy for the well being of another. These are life lessons that my students and I hope to grapple with through the play Twelve Angry Men.
Donations to this project will not go to waste.
We don't simply want to read another good story, but in the light of so many current events, we want to have students see themselves as important members of society. Indeed, because of the topic, reading this play may make students angry, but if they can see the benefit of reading, reasoning, and communicating, then we'll be on our way to changing their lives for the better. Thanks for being a part of that.
