Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read! They love reading for pleasure and reading to learn information. They love fiction and talking about characters and plot and they also love learning new information from nonfiction books.
My students are in the first grade who were slightly below grade level when finishing kindergarten and entering first grade and now their academic levels are beginning to soar.
They work cooperatively and respectfully with each other. They have learned to never give up. No matter how difficult the work may be, they have learned to use the resources around the classroom to help them with reading, writing, and math.
My Project
Our favorite day of the week is Monday. On Monday the children go "book shopping". That's when they return their 8 independent leveled books from their book baggy and "shop" for 8 new ones. The room is buzzing with excitement and eagerness to read their new selections. With my 20+ years in teaching kindergarten I have accumulated many of these books in the kindergarten levels, but not the first grade levels. First graders need to move through 6+ reading levels from September to June. My children are beginning to read the same books over and over again because we just don't have enough books in the higher levels. These requested leveled books coordinate with phonics skills that we are learning. The children then have the opportunity to apply the strategies they have learned that will make them successful readers. You should hear their excitement when they tell their parents, " I am reading on level __ now!"
Your donation to this project will give the children the opportunity to "shop" for different books from week to week so they can become better readers and to continue to LOVE reading!
Let's also remember that reading is strongly associated to writing. The more reading they do, the better their writing will get too!
