Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At risk students, some rich, many poor, find that their last chance is in a continuation high school (10-12). At risk students often struggle with basics, but mastering academic content is the success they need to stay in school. In a continuation high school, not only basic math, but also Algebra and Geometry, which engage higher order thinking, are taught.
In the more challenging activities, calculators are used so that students don't bog down. Otherwise they lose focus while doing arithmetic, when they need to stay on concepts. However, the hodgepodge of the "usual suspect" calculators work incorrectly for learning.
Only one manufacturer, Casio, offers a low-cost calculator with a natural display of rational fractions. Instead of 5.3333333333, 5 1/3 or 16/3 can also be displayed. Instead of sqrt(125) = 11.18033, 5sqrt(5) can be shown using the radical sign. This makes calculators useful in instruction; since most math problems expect rational and irrational numbers in their solutions, not just decimals. Generally, 21 students are in a class. Each works independently. Most teachers and students don't know about low cost natural display calculators, please help them find out.
15 more 2-line calculators that display rational fractions naturally will be shared between 120 students. Previously, 10 of these calculators were purchased by people like you at DonorsChoose. Yeah! They work so well that they are called the SEXY calculators and students fight for them. Please help place one next to each workstation. I have the Velcro.
