Calculators for Squares

My students need 20 calculators in order to be able to perform advanced mathematical operations such as square roots, exponential form and complicated long division problems.

My Students

What is a math classroom without a machine to compute the math? The level of thinking that it takes to compute a square root is more than I could ever ask for from my students. Please save my students' brains and aching fingers by supplying our classroom with calculators!

My school is a predominantly low socioeconomic school.

For every eighteen students, maybe two to three of them are not considered at a low socioeconomic status. We are a Pre-K through 8 school. Many of the students will leave our school only to travel 20 to 30 miles in order to go to their next school local. In addition to being low socio, my students are also predominantly Native American. We have a very high sense of pride for our culture. My students are enthusiastic and ever persevering. In the end there are two words that I have to describe my students: proud and compassionate.

My Project

I do not let my students use the calculator for day to day arithmetic; however, I do allow them to use it for complex computations. We would use them to calculate square roots and exponents. We would also be able to compute permutations. My students will be able to also perform four to five digit long division with ease.

My students need to know how to use a calculator before they leave for high school.

If not, they will be behind once there. If my classroom is provided with calculators, my students will be able to become more productive once they reach the higher level of learning.
