My students will need 35 scientific calculators for the physical science end-of-course test as well as for in-class work.

I teach physical science and biology to ninth and tenth graders in a high poverty district in the state of South Carolina. Our school is located in a rural town where most students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school has also fallen victim to harsh budget cuts recently and all instructional spending has been suspended until further notice.

Physical Science is usually assigned to students in tenth grade because of the level of math needed to be successful. This year, however, there have been many ninth graders placed in Physical Science. Because most of them have not had Algebra yet, so I am having to walk them through the math dealing with physics. I feel that it would be much easier for me to do this if my students were provided calculators to help them with some of the calculations.

I will need 35 scientific calculators to be able to lend to my students while they take this physical science course. With calculators, students will not have to spend as much time doing calculations on paper and will therefore get a more thorough understanding of the actual content of the course. Since our school can not provide the students with these calculators due to lack of funds I am asking for your help.

With your help, I am positive that my students will obtain a better understanding of physical science. I also feel that my students, after having used these calculators all semester, will be able to achieve higher scores on the end-of-course test than if they used a calculator not familiar to them. Your generosity will make a huge impact on the confidence of my students by helping them with the most difficult and time consuming aspect of physical science, calculations.
