My students need (students with special needs) cooking supplies for our kitchen to teach life skills. The kitchen is almost complete, now we need to fill it! Thank you!
For my students with special needs, school is more than just learning how to read and write. To them, school is an open door to a world full of possibilities. It is my goal to prepare them for that world.
As a special education teacher, I am often told that my students have disabilities.
However, in my classroom, we do not focus on their disabilities, but their possibilities! I teach in a third grade, self-contained, special education class in a suburban school in Northern New Jersey. My students are the greatest group of kids you will every meet. Watching them work to overcome their struggles inspires me everyday.
My Project
Education in the United States often focuses on reading, writing, and Arithmetic. However, for students with special needs, their education must go beyond the textbook. Students with disabilities often need instruction in daily life skills at a young age to help become productive community members in the future. They also need to learn effective communication skills. Life skills and communication skills should be taught simultaneously while incorporating essential academic instruction. Cafe Kids is a program that combines life skill and communication instruction with an underlying academic focus.
To help make our program a success, we are in need of supplies that are essential for the students to cook in the kitchen. We are asking for pots and pans, kitchen utensils such as spoons, spatulas, and kitchen knifes, aprons, and apple peelers. Our kitchen also needs mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, and an egg timer.
By starting life skills instruction in the early years, students will be able to apply what they have learned at home, creating a bridge between home and school that will establish a total learning experience.
This will enable students to retain the skills learned through adulthood. Students will gain self-confidence in themselves and in their abilities as they work collaboratively with the community.
