Do you remember what it was like the first time that you left your home town or state? Do you remember making connections between the books that you were reading and the places you had visited? For many of my students, leaving their home state, let alone their home town, is not yet a reality.
My students attend a public middle-high school in South Carolina.
The school which they attend is a Title I school, with 90% of our students receiving free-and-reduced lunch. A large percentage of students in the middle school read below grade level. The setting that my school provides greatly benefits my students; however, because we are so rural, our students do not receive exposure to many things outside of their local, rural community that helps them build schema. Research has shown that in order for reading material to resonate with students and for them to fully comprehend the material, they need to make tangible, real life connections.
My Project
With the support of generous donors, my students will be given the opportunity to travel to our nation's capital, Washington DC. This trip will enhance their learning experience as well as their lives in many ways. Not only will the trip provide our students with tangible and visual learning opportunities and allow them to make cross curricular connections between Social Studies and English and Math and Science, but it will also teach them about the lifestyle of a large city as compared with their rural town. Furthermore, our students may feel pride for their country overall as they will be spending time in a place that recognizes and documents our history as Americans.
Thank you in advance for contributing to the success of our students.
As William Butler Yeats once said, "education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire"; thank you for helping us promote life long learning and lighting the fire for our students.
