Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners. My school district is a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to economic status and English language deficits. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students love to read, learn, and love lots of positive attention.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
The Informational Read Alongs will help my students build their reading fluency by using books about things they enjoy reading about which is animals.
When students enjoy reading about things that interest them, they read more which in turn builds reading skills and a love for reading.
ELL students often struggle with producing and writing rhyming word, so using word building cards they will be able to build their phonemic awareness skills.
Knowledge of phonemes is very important for my ELL kids to learn the english language and provides me a way to immerse them in an active linguistic environment.
