Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every school year, students ask me for good books to read, and though I have plenty thoughts on the topic, what I cannot provide is access to those books. This project can fix this problem.
My students are high school sophomores and seniors.
They are the most awesome students I teacher can hope for. My students are smart, motivated, and hilarious. They make time in my classroom fly by. In fact, time with them doesn't feel like work. My students, by and large, are Latinos and African Americans from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college.
My Project
These books will foster reading comprehension and writing, for what few people recognize is the fact that people learn to write by internalizing the syntax and vocabulary they read, including what they read outside of school. It's this internal process I hope to spur whilst fostering a love for reading.
This project will help my students become better readers and writers.
Thus, this project will prepare for the rigor and challenges of college, for no student can succeed in college without having read books from cover to cover and knowing how to write. This project will allow me to challenge my students and foster their critical thinking and, in effect, prepare them for college and life.
