Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you could give students an extra year to prepare for school, would you? That's Transitional Kinder and the great opportunity I have as their teacher. This opportunity is met with the great challenge of providing enough materials and active, hands-on experiences appropriate for their age.
We have a very active Transitional Kindergarten (TK) in an urban school district.
My students are primarily English Language Learners and developmentally all very active. There is a special group of boys and girls who are born between September 1 and December 1 who qualify for Transitional Kindergarten. We are part of a fairly high achieving Title 1 school in a community where most students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. The new TK program in our state is a great opportunity to bridge the gap between preschool and the Kindergarten academic program. The students need to learn social and emotional skills to help them be ready for the demands of the Common Core standards. They also are getting a solid foundation in language arts and math.
My Project
With the resources provided in this DonorsChoose.org project I will be able to provide: 1. Multi-cultural hands-on family figures for role-playing 2. Guided reading groups with 100 fiction and non-fiction leveled books. 3. Puppet set for story-telling and language arts centers. I currently use similar materials daily and see the benefits. In addition to subject area knowledge related to the various units during our year, the students learn to work with others, to regulate their emotions, and fine motor coordination. Because the TK program is new our school has pretty limited resources. The school does have a resources room where items can be checked out by teachers but they were purchased with grades K-6 in mind, not TK. In addition, there hasn't been enough time for great investment in durable resources like the ones listed in my project. Long-term curriculum plans are still being written for this grade.
This project will be a great boost to my students, supporting the main component of very active, hands-on learning needed in TK.
In the various dynamics in the activities with these materials (puppets, books, and blocks) we will see growth in their English language development as well as their social-emotional foundations. The donations will help to make our classroom a special place of pride and where a community of little learners can flourish.
