My Students

Integrated Pest Management - how's that for a middle school vocabulary? Well that is the type of hands on learning I would like to provide for my students.

I have over 200 multi-ethnic students pass through my class each school year.

They come with varying abilities, but they all love getting up and going outside to learn. The hands on learning they will be introduced to in my class may open up career choices they have never imagined.

My Project

The idea is to get the students to learn about the bugs in our new vegetable garden. They have built the fences, raised the garden beds, and mixed the soil. Now when we plant - little strange friends are going to visit and the students are going to need to know who is there to help and who is there to feast on our food. This is where the students will be taking live insects from the field and bringing them back to the lab to find out what the bugs are doing in the garden. From this we will decide who gets to stay and who has to leave. Beneficial insects will be returned to the garden and other insects will be relocated to a less harmful location.

The students will have an incredible opportunity, not only to learn how to use digital microscopes, but how to collect specimens and identify them.

They will then learn that how to better protect their crops from insects that may destroy crops and be on the look out for these pests. This is a great way to learn how to use insects in the garden - Integrated Pest Management at its most basic level gives great food for the students.
