My Students

If you are going to grow a garden, you better find out who is visiting!

Our public school has a huge variety of students that come through our career class to learn about the environment (over 210 students a year).

There is one thing they have in common though, that is there love of catching and learning about bugs! BUt how can you see those little buggers?

My Project

I have put together a computer lab during my "free time" so that my students can better use the technology that surrounds them everyday. Digital microscopes hooked up to the computers will allow the students to learn the power of the technology while learning about the natural world that surrounds them. During the entomology unit I take the students out to our native plant garden to gather up the the bugs that surround the students daily, that they don't notice. We bring them back to the class to try and identify them and then release them back to their homes.

With the digital microscopes the students will be able to capture pictures of the bugs, study their structure and have an image they can use to identify them and to refer to them later.

The end goal is to get the kids to know good bugs versus pests and to learn how to use nature instead of chemicals when you are trying to protect plants in the garden.
