Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Giving this country's young minds rich, thoughtful books to capture their imaginations is essential to their growth as thinkers and readers. Less than 14 percent of low-income students read at grade level. Be the difference for my students and provide them with powerful texts to empower their minds.
My students come from a number of walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds, although the majority are of a minority and low-income background.
Because of the diverse community of learners at their school, every day is a lesson in bridging cultural differences for my students.
My Project
My students need books to read in literature circles. Students will use these novels in literature circles. They will be able to choose the book that interests them most from the list and will then work in what are essentially mini-book clubs. The small groups will read, discuss, and engage with the material on a much deeper level than is possible to do in a full-class setting. They will have the advantage of the groups being largely student-led, which will provide students with the opportunity to be both leaders and to be active in their own learning.
Mark Twain said, "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." This project is my attempt to help children in their quest to find that exact right book.
I want my students to love reading the way I love reading and I want them to see the drastic importance of reading in their everyday lives. Please help me to achieve my goal, and in doing so, help my kids to achieve their goals. Be the catalyst. Be the change.
