This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Budget cuts! Budget cuts! Budget cuts! Most schools cannot afford basic art supplies, let alone the special brushes, ink, and paper needed to create the delicate ink wash paintings called Sumi-e. Please help my students obtain the supplies necessary for this special art form.

My students have all been identified highly gifted.

These children have special needs and require a differentiated instructional program to provide them with a challenging and rigorous academic setting. My students are inquisitive and thoughtful. They love to learn! It is up to me to bring in as much supplemental materials as possible to stimulate their minds and encourage their exploration of new concepts. Since my students tend to perform very well on standardized tests, they are often overlooked and receive very little funding to support their educational program. Our district provides us only $15 per student to purchase supplemental materials for the entire program. We are a public school comprised of three classrooms. Our small school shares a campus with the resident school for this area. Our school is located in a mostly middle to low socioeconomic area. We have a very strong community and parent base who are all vested in providing support for student achievement.

My Project

I integrate art into my curriculum as much as possible. With this lesson, my students will create a Sumi-e, or ink wash, painting after reading a haiku poem. Sometimes considered to be the earliest example of expressionistic art, Sumi-e attempts to capture the essence of the subject in as few brush strokes as possible. My fourth graders will not only learn how to interpret haiku, they will also learn about the ancient technique of Sumi-e. Although I have done this lesson for several years, I will be able to provide my students the proper tools to create this special type of art for the very first time. My students will not only learn the purpose of Sumi-e, but also the technique. They will learn how to hold the brush and their arm properly. They will learn the technique to apply the ink to their special sumi brush and to their Japanese rice paper in order to create the proper shading. After creating their Sumi-e paintings, my students will write a haiku poem inspired by their own art.

My students and I thank you for considering our project.

Your donation will show my students that people still understand the importance of arts education in our schools. My students will not only learn about the art of another culture, they will understand that artists need special materials for different types of art. Again, we thank you for your support in our endeavor to keep the arts alive in our schools.
