Theater is an exciting teaching tool which empowers students to explore and discover meaning in topics and situations across the curricula. Being able to accurately record these productions in a variety of lighting and sound situations has become impossible using inexpensive camcorders.
We are a rural school, which utilizes the arts as a means of fostering understanding of core academic content.
Our plays (often original productions written by students) explore math, science, and social studies through the integration of visual, music, movement, and technology. We are a K-8th grade school, serving over 380 students, with a poverty rate of almost 50% free and reduced lunch.
My Project
Theater is an amazing tool for engaging students. Beginning in Kindergarten, students participate in a variety of stage performances, with lighting and sound and technical support provided through our middle school AV team.
The AV team is a group of students who have been trained on how to use the lighting and sound boards, and how to design sound cues on a laptop, and how to run video from a laptop. Being a part of the AV club is an honor and a chance for students to give service to the school and show leadership. This investment will expand the role of the AV team, empowering them to capture the theater performances in high-quality and high definition video. This camcorder will have the ability to expertly adjust to the variety of lighting situations our students' utilize when designing productions, and deliver the quality necessary to produce non-pixilated and/or unrecognizable on-stage blurs that result from a camcorder's inability to tape in low or bright lighting.
Students are proud of what they create and their performances on stage.
This investment of a professional grade camcorder will allow these student-centered works to be preserved and shared in a quality that is not only allows them to be recognized on stage, but also empowers greater student participation in the total theater experience by adding the component of video taping. This project will better prepare our students for the 21st Century and their skills in multimedia productions.
