When students enter my classroom, whether it is for Forensics or Chemistry, they know that they will be challenged. Part of the process of challenging students in science is providing them with the types of experiences that best mimic real-life science.
The students at my high school want to be there.
The students are willing and able to take an active role in their education and want to succeed. Most of the students in the school come from homes where many problems exist. For many of the students school is a place to escape. Because school for these students is a place to escape they do not want to be passive learners. They want to be active. In the science classroom this means exploration. Technology is needed so the students can complete this exploration and be prepared for the workforce they will be entering. The students at my school benefit when this technology is used in the classroom. Unfortunately, too often projects in the classroom resemble the same types of projects that I did in high school due to the lack of 21st century technology.
My Project
The kits that are being requested will introduce the students to the Forensics concepts of electrophoresis and entomology. Electrophoresis is used in Forensics and other science fields to help students evaluate and analyze DNA samples. Using this kit will enable students to identify unknowns. The entomology kit will demonstrate to students how the life cycles of certain insects enable scientists to determine aspects of a case such as time of death.
Donating to projects such as this one help my science students feel that what they are doing in science is real.
Real-life applications enable students to take more ownership of their work. Providing the technology from these kits will help prepare the students as members as members of the scientific community in the 21st century.
