At the end of this school year I would like my students to understand and appreciate how art can serve a functional purpose in their home. My students will use textile mosaics to create a trivet that will be a central part of the family dining room table.
My students come from many different backgrounds.
Yet most families have dinner together as a central part of their evening. That time allows a family to connect and share the day's activities. I would like my students to create a functional art piece that can connect their home with the art making in class.
My Project
Creating an art piece that can be taken home and used by the family allows the student to share and connect the art class project with their family. I am asking for ceramic tiles, Masonite bases, grout, and other materials to create a mosaic tile trivet. If you do now know what a trivet is, it protects the table from a hot pot or plate. The trivet is placed under the hot item and therefore becomes a central part of the dining room table.
My 4th and 5th grade students will bring home a mosaic tile trivet.
This trivet will impact them and their families by continuously bringing art and craftsmanship into their homes. The trivet will remain as part of the family dining experience and connect art within their lives. I hope this art piece will be a constant connection and discussion item over the family dining room table and aid in bringing their families together to discuss the activities of their children's day.
