Every morning I thank my lucky stars that I get to share my passion with 200 kids a day. Each day we venture into creativity chasing lines, color and ideas all over our papers. For most this will be their only chance to work with art materials in a world dominated by technology and testing.
This is high school where the kids are glad to be here every day.
Many of my students live in multi-generational households where they take care of each other on very limited incomes. Most of our students are on free lunch and for some it may be the only meal they have for the day. They are not your typical student in Orange County, there are less than 100 white kids who attend this school of more than 2000. Most of the population is Asian with many Hispanic students as well. Many are no English speakers who have come here with their families with the hope of success in school and a better life in the United States.
My Project
The materials I am asking for will be used to teach the students about the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos. Students will have the opportunity to work on their drawing skills, colored pencil techniques and design. This project will follow VAPA standards for design and cultural exploration as well as exploring many of the elements and principals of art. Students will draw sugar skull and trace the line with a glue/paint mixture that will become the map to be colored by layering colored pencils. These large Calavera portraits will be a wonderful addition to the ofrenda in our classroom.
For the Hispanic students in my class it will be a chance to share a part of their heritage and celebrate their culture.
For the large Asian population will is expose them to something they may have never seen before. It is an opportunity to celebrate diversity as well as each other.
