My Students

Understanding the culture and history of the Middle East can be challenging when students cannot actually experience what it is like to be in another person's society and culture. It becomes difficult for students to relate to situations and put themselves in another person's shoes.

My students are public high school students learning about world cultures, history, and geography.

The school is located not too far from the Mississippi River. Students often get a chance to learn through a combination of video, technology, discussion, and the textbook.

My Project

A class set of Persepolis will provide a story that students can relate to as it is told through a child's eyes. Students will get much more than they would through a textbook as they get a chance to see the world from someones eyes. Marjane Satrapi provides this all through her amazing graphic novel.

My project is important for making history and culture from the other side of the world "real" to my students.

It will also provide a great example of storytelling in which students will eventually create comics of other historical and culturally significant events.
