Bring Art Back!

My students need 16 new paint sets, 60 brushes, and 144 pastels to appreciate what art has to offer. They also need 66 ceiling hooks to hang their artwork with.

Ms. Wong Ulloa Elementary School
San Francisco, CA Grades 3-5

I teach 4th grade in San Francisco. My students mostly live in the neighborhood and seldom have the chance to travel to other parts of the city, thus having a very sheltered childhood. They come from homes with both parents working and almost all are qualified for free or reduced lunches. I love my school and my students because although many of them come from families that have hardships, they continue to work hard and value what education has to offer.

Each year, as we face more budget and program cuts, the first to go is always Art and Music. Unfortunately, what people don't realize is that Art is connected to many academic areas, and integrating Art into our curriculum has proved time after time to increase our students' academic performance. In fact, art is all around us and a part of life. It is so important for children to have the opportunity to express themselves and learn how valuable art is. The problem I face everyday is the lack of materials. I have to scrounge and scramble just to get some old bottles of paint and some cheap watercolor sets. My students are unable to experience what art has to offer if the materials are not quality.

Each time I announce that we are doing art, my students' faces light up. Please help supply us with some quality art materials so we can work on art projects that have meaning. If we had quality brushes and paints, my students could experience what it is like to paint with vivid colors and clean brushes. We wouldn't have to paint with brushes that have been reused for 5 years with old paint caked on it. The tempera blocks can replace our old watercolor sets that have been overused and mixed to undeciphered colors. We could finally do an art project such as a self-portrait and not have to share 12 sets of watercolors between 30 kids. We could paint vocabulary words or design landscapes to go with our narratives! Please provide us with pastels so my students can experience art through a different medium. As we study Geometry or Picasso, we can sketch with pastels and even use the tempera blocks with the pastels to do resist projects. Using pastels and tempera blocks, my students will find new ways to express themselves. Finally, you can't do art without displaying it! Please supply us with some ceiling hooks so we can display our art work. I teach in a bungalow and there isn't any other place to display our art work.

You will make it possible for my students to have access to materials they would not have at home. This exposure might encourage some of my students to become artists. My students will be able to make connections between art we do in class and art we see on field trips. They will be delighted with new materials and so grateful that there are people out there willing to help. Many people say no one invests in Education because it provides no profits. But know this, you will be making a difference in a child's life and bringing a smile to their faces! This is better than any profit I can think of.
