Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a high poverty high school in Concord, CA, in an area that suffers from many of the problems that the media tend to emphasize: drugs, gangs, poverty, and high-unemployment. Yet in the midst of these tribulations a group of students have managed to transcend these problems.
"They had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind..." George Orwell, Animal Farm, Chapter 7.
As an teacher, one of my most important jobs is to help my students see the power of language, both the language they consume and the language they use.
Many of our students come from immigrant families, and most are striving to be the first generation in their families to attend college.
My Project
I believe that the novel Animal Farm will engage my students as they learn about social inequality and types of governments that enforce it. The students will also learn what it takes to be a good leader. The novel also demonstrates an analogy of the Soviet Union and Stalin to the farmer and the farm animals. As the animals revolt against the farmer, whom they feel is unusually cruel, they discover that there has to be 'ground rules' for their society. Obviously, this can lead the students in a deeper learning and understanding of what type of government is best for not only themselves, but society as a whole.
As an "economical disadvantaged" school, my students stand little to no chance of receiving these novels without donations from this site. The advantages that they can receive from this novel are basically endless, especially since it will carry over into their adulthood lives.
We do not have grade level sets of classic literature like Animal Farm.
My students only have access to short excerpts found in textbooks which limits their exposure. I believe exposure to complete works of amazing writing will encourage students so that they can read the classics, and thereby, improve their own writing. More importantly, I deeply desire students to explore and develop their passion for reading a diverse range of literature.
