Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my class includes an active day of math games and group activities, science experiments, social studies activities, and writing projects. This year I will be teaching reading and word study as well, which I look forward to as a new challenge. This project will help me reach our students in this area.
Our class is packed with students from a wide variety of socioeconomic groups, cultures, and ability levels.
I also teach a number of students with special needs including ADHD, Autism, learning/retention issues, and general behavior challenges. They all come with their own bag of talents and have a way of lighting up our classroom. Our school also won the NCUST award in 2015 and the 2018 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award from the state of Virginia which truly reflects the success we have working with students such as these in an urban environment.
My Project
My students will feel like real detectives as they work as a team to solve problems and puzzles in reading, math, science, and social studies in order to unlock combination locks to get to a secret treasure. I was fortunate to work at a school over the summer with students who had access to this activity and have never seen students so engaged! They would scream, "Breakout Box Day!" when they saw it on the table. I want my own students to have this same opportunity. Breakout EDU kits help students "accidentally" learn and fosters a sense of cooperation and problem-solving at a level seldom seen in an elementary classroom. The workbooks will be used in conjunction with the Breakout EDU kits to create puzzles and as stand-alone items to fill in gaps in the reading and language arts curriculum to ensure my students are prepared for standardized testing and are able to be the best readers possible.
