Our city's public schools are going to offer a string orchestra class in middle school for the very first time next year! Our school's music department is excited and committed to supporting the orchestra as much as possible! Starting an orchestra from scratch will require everyone's help!
Our city is located on the urban fringe of a large metropolitan area.
Parts of our city have high poverty rates, and our entire school district does qualify for Title I services.
Our students are always excited about joining the band and choir in middle school. As we add four more instruments and a brand new ensemble to their list of options, I am certain their excitement will grow even more!
As we start this new orchestra, we want to be sure that financial circumstances, whatever they may be, are not a major contributing factor in a family's decision whether to participate in orchestra. To this end, we have a giant mountain to climb as we outfit our new orchestra classroom with all the instruments, music, and supplies required to provide high quality instruction to each student, no matter his or her financial circumstances.
My Project
My students need instrument humidifiers and end pin rests for our brand new string orchestra! The instruments we will purchase and maintain in the classroom are a huge investment in our students' future. Stringed instruments require constant temperature and humidity to stay in tune and in playing condition. Our cello double bass players also require endpin rests for their instruments. Cellos and double basses have a sharp or rubber-tipped point on the end that can damage classroom floors or slide along the floor accidentally while the musician is playing. The endpin rests (or rock stops) help keep the instrument stable while playing, and preserve the rehearsal room floors.
The items purchased with this grant will be cared for and used for many years in our orchestra classroom.
In an era where many music educators are losing their positions and many music departments are being asked to downsize, our district is "doubling down" on the importance of music education in our schools.
As music teachers, we are committed to this new program's success and sustainability.
You, too, can be a part of this success. Your donation reaffirms the importance of music education. You are providing the basic supplies so that our students can make beautiful music in each coming year.
