We have very creative students at our elementary school and we are always looking for ways to create exciting artwork.
My students are from a low income Title I school with 85% of them receiving free or reduced lunch.
They do not have much at home and are excited to use the supplies and work at the projects in art. Their enthusiasm spurs me on to be a better teacher and provide more for them. They are appreciative as well .
My Project
Last year I requested my students and their families to recycle lids of all kinds by bringing them to the art room for a 5th grade art project. Lids arrived by the zillions. I had to ask them to stop because my room was overloaded with them. The students created fish lid art and they are hanging around the school (cover picture is a sample of one). This project was such a success that other grade levels are asking to do it. We have lids galore but we lack supplies. It is the supplies for this that I am asking you to provide. The major thing we need are small electric screw drivers and screws. I investigated all kinds of glues and nothing would hold sufficiently, so screws and screwdrivers have to be used. The students find using these tools fun and it is another skill they are developing, adding yet another dimension to producing art.
Reusing, reducing and recycling is very important to our earth.
This is an important lesson to learn and, as we turn refuse into art, it is a demonstration as well as an art project. We collect the recycle items and we sort them as part of the project and then we turn them into art with amazing results. In this case they are displayed around the school. All of this bringing attention to the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing waste to save our planet.
