My Students

The class I would like the books for is a regular 8th grade class. They are a great group of kids and need a high interest, easy book to read. Many of them have never read a whole book, and are afraid of reading. By the end of the year I want them to have a love of reading!

I am at a magnet school, which means 98% of our students are bused in.

We have students from all kinds of backgrounds. We are 4th - 12th grades. These 8th grade students are extremely diverse in ability level and backgrounds. Most of my boy students have never read a book.

My Project

My students will read the book and we will have many exciting activities related to the book. The will learn new vocabulary. The will learn that books, and reading can be exciting. This book fits with the Common Core Standards. The will learn the joy of picking up a book and not wanting to put it down.

I have always taught 11th/12th grades.

This is my first year taking on an 8th grade class. By the 11th/12 grades students learn to hate reading because teachers give books that are meaningless to them, too hard, or too antiquated. I'm trying to grab these kids at an early stage and set them up to learn a love of reading early on. No one can become a better reader, writer or thinker unless they read. I'm hoping this book will be a start down that path.
