This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help! Our school "bookstore" is so popular that we are running out of books!

Our school is located in a rural county.

In the past 15 years, the demographics in our community and school have changed dramatically due to the influx of immigrant workers primarily working at our food processing plants. Our school has a population of about 80% Latino and 98% free and reduced lunch. Our students face coming to a home where there are few, if any, books, as well as other resources that may promote literacy. Many of their parents do not speak English.

My Project

Research shows that students raised in households where they have easy access to books are more likely to be successful readers and have greater success in all academic areas. Children in communities where there are more libraries and access to all manner of print materials are more likely to be successful academically. Our successful Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) seamlessly provides a way for our school to attempt to meet those needs. Our students "shop" for books using tickets they have earned by making positive choices, weighing the consequences of their choices, setting short and long-term goals, and delaying gratification. These life skills are paramount for future academic success.

Your donation to our school program will place books in the hands and homes of kids that desperately need them.

In addition, the values and skills our students acquire by making positive choices will be rewarded in a manner that has been proven to be popular with all K-5 students, successful in meeting their needs, and effective in developing those life-long skills.
