My students need a variety of books that will excite and engage them. I have chosen classics and contemporary, fiction and nonfiction, traditional and graphic novels.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal is to create life-long readers and writers. It all starts with a book - the right book - one that each individual chooses and wants to read. Most of my students walk into my class expecting to be told what to read or thinking that silent reading is punishment. I'm looking to change that.
Middle school students are special kids.
They are sensitive and creative, tough and hard working, silly and serious. I know all too well that these middle years can make or break how a child feels about school and themselves.
The majority of my students come from Hispanic, often bilingual, households and military families. My job is to take 150+ kiddos of diverse backgrounds and abilities and get them all reading and writing at a high level.
My Project
My vision is a classroom library overflowing with books for all types of readers: fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, graphic novels, classics, and contemporary books. Every day my students will participate in independent reading at the beginning of class. (Picture it: kids laying on the floor, huddled together, sitting on desktops, each child engrossed in the book in front of them!) For the most part, the books they will read will come from the classroom library as they don't have access to good reading material at home.
At one point I had quite the library, but I donated my books when I thought I wouldn't be teaching anymore. Turns out teaching sucked me back in. Now I've got students that I know would be great readers if only I could put the right books in their hands.
Readers are made not born.
As an English teacher, my job is to cultivate that love of reading in my students, and it can't happen without quality, engaging reading material. Over 150 kids will grow from the opportunity to read high-interest material on a daily basis.
