I work in a low income school district where many of my students do not have access to quality literature. I want to provide this for them. I have been teaching for two years and have continued to grow my collection, but it needs a little love. After all, you can never have too many books!
My school is fantastic, we truly do the best with what we have, It is a very positive environment.
My students are awesome and love to learn! I work in a low income low income district, so many of my students are below their expected reading level. It is my intention that being exposed to quality literature will aid in getting them where they need to be. Third grade is a year that can make or break a students future success. Many statistics show that majority of children not reading on level by grade 3, do not graduate high school. This is quite alarming! So I am doing everything I can to get them reading on level!
My Project
I would like to have quality literature available to me when I am planning units. It is always more meaningful for students to start a unit with a great story. It gives them a point of reference as we move through the unit. They constantly refer back and connect thinking to the text. This learning is much more meaningful when using quality literature. For example: The book Roxaboxen is about kids who create their own community. I will use this story to launch a project so the students can create their own community!
“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
― Dr. Seuss
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. Martin
Reading is a vital skill for success. I want my students to succeed not only in the classroom, but in their lives! Reading can aid in both of these goals.
