Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One goal that I have for my Kindergartners is to strengthen their vocabulary & reading skills. These kiddos go from learning their ABC's to reading small books! I want them to go even further to own & LOVE their reading, writing & math knowledge!
Our school has a high English Language Learner population in a low income community.
These Kindergartners are SO excited to come to school and learn everyday! We try to make every day exciting for them & encourage their individual learning! I hope that each of my students leaves our classroom continuing to have that love and excitement of learning and exploring!
My Project
We would love to have more books to read during our Guided Reading time with the teacher. We have a limited number of books at the students reading levels for them to enjoy.
We also were low on dice last year. We borrowed some from other teachers but would be nice to have our own classroom set for the students to easily access.
We would love a "Vocabulary" iPad. Since these kiddos are just learning to read, AND are English Language Learners, I would like to try to make an interactive vocabulary wall where they can take an iPad up to a word, scan it (or match a picture to it) to hear the word being pronounced, a definition of the word, and a video or image of the vocabulary word. This will help me to reach all the different learning styles within my class and teach students how to use the resources we have available in the room to extend their learning. This will help students to extend their vocabulary and review our learning.
Since these students are already trying to learn a new language, making vocabulary important and accessible will increase their enjoyment of reading as well as their social skills.
By reading books at my students levels, everyday, we will help them to learn to read on their own, guiding them along the way. The dice will be helpful for us to play math games and to make our learning fun!
