In my classroom, I try to give students several choices of activities to do that focus on reading, writing, math, etc. By doing this they have buy-in and are willing to participate. I am able to offer them several choices that still accomplish the objectives we're working on. It's win-win!
My school is located in a rural school district and we are at 54% free and reduced lunch.
That's a good mix of low socioeconomic students and students from middle class backgrounds. This particular group of students I will be teaching this upcoming year have had a rocky start to their educational careers. They've had teachers that went out with medical issues, their classes have been split, then recombined, then split again. They are due for some consistency that I am hoping to provide for them.
My Project
I recently moved to this school and there are no book bins available to organize my supply of books. I've been creating an expansive classroom library for the past nine years (thanks to yard sales and thrift shops). I plan to use the label maker to clearly label each book with the appropriate reading level. I've used colored stickers in the past, but they kept falling off and I'd have to tape them. The book bins will be used to organize the books by reading level so that students can easily access books at their level. They will also be taught to return the books to their appropriate bin when they've finished. Without bins to hold and organize my books, students will need to search through them all to find an appropriate book. This takes time away from their reading time.
There is a popular quote in education: "The more you read, the better you read." I believe that keeping an organized classroom library will encourage students to read leveled books without wasting time searching through the entire library!
