My students need examples of concrete poetry and pop-up books with which they can interact.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every week, we start with a question, a literary quote, or a photo. Students are asked to think, to question and to express themselves in writing. My goal is that students not only become effective writers and readers, but that they appreciate the power of words.
My students are economically disadvantaged, their parents may not speak English, and they may not know anyone that has graduated from college.
Even though they face these obstacles, they are capable and have the desire to learn. The majority of my students this year are non-traditional Pre-AP students. I say non-traditional because they are not necessarily the students with the best grades, but they are the students that someone noticed and believed that they could do more or should be challenged.
My Project
I'm hoping to share these books in the classroom throughout the year and to use them specifically during our poetry lessons and class discussions on what a book is and what a book isn't. I'm also hoping to do something more, which is to inspire students to think differently about words and books. I believe that giving students the gift of wonder and possibility is not something that is necessarily tangible, but it is a great gift.
Most students have a traditional view of books and reading and don't understand that words have a life of their own.
Pop-up and concrete poetry books offer students a visual and tactile exploration into that world. Books are read backwards and need to be turned upside down to be understood and hopefully enjoyed. A book becomes a little world unto itself, which is really what a book is.
