Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with an amazing group of students with Autism. My students face challenges every day communicating and learning. Despite their challenges and different levels of abilities, all of my students love books and build valuable language skills during our adapted literacy lessons.

I am a Speech Language Pathologist in an inner city, high-need district.

Our district is large (34 schools) and our needs are great. I provide direct therapy services to 25 students in 3 classrooms in our Autism program. The students in this program are challenged daily to communicate and interact with others. They have a wide range of communication skills and benefit from the use of visual supports when communicating. Many of these students are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills and need speech generating devices to support their communication. I also provide augmentative communication services to students district wide. It's my job to assess students and our classrooms. I recommend devices that will enhance communication opportunities and provide training to the teachers on how to use the devices with our students and in their classrooms.

My Project

Adapted literacy lessons are my favorite lessons to teach and model. These lessons are incredibly effective with students with complex communication needs. With your help, this project will add 21 new books that have been chosen because of their rich vocabulary and repetitive phrases. These stories when paired with speech generating devices give all of my students an opportunity to participate in our stories. Picture supports are placed in the books to facilitate selection on the devices giving the students a way to participate in the repetitive phrases and answer questions. The sentence strips are used to sequence the pictures for an accurate retell of the story and the book bins will keep our books neat and organized.

Your help will provide me with a collection of books and materials that will support and expand the language skills of my amazing students.

The crucial language skills that will be acquired with the books will directly impact the success of my students this year and will build important communication skills that will last a lifetime.
