My students need 22 amazing books to get their minds thinking. All books included are award winning pieces of literature like The Giver, Number the Stars, and Holes.
Do you remember the first 'big' book that you read as a child? I like to call them Home Run books. They are the books that helped you to love reading. In my 5th grade classroom, I want to instill that love of reading with all of my students by providing them with amazing literature to sink into!
My classroom is 1 of 3 5th grade classes in a small rural school.
We are departmentalized so I actually teach the entire grade level social studies and informational writing. Fifth graders are amazing mini-adults. While still children who want to play, they also want to learn about the world. They have reached the age that they realize there is more to this world than just their community.
My Project
The students, over 75 of them, will have access to the books that I am requesting. These books will help them expand their minds, imaginations, and worlds. They will be able to use these in comparing them to other literature, to themselves, and to the outside world. These books will also serve the purpose of helping students build knowledge on situations and events that they have not experienced while they learn about history. For example, using Holes by Louis Sachar to explain how slaves or servants might have felt.
These materials will be used to help students expand their horizons so that they can better understand history and community.
My hope is that by allowing them to 'see' into characters minds they will in turn develop empathy and caring towards others and become more well rounded citizens.
