My Students

I want to begin a 6th Grade Book Club that will engage my students in authentic literature discussions and nurture their development of crucial interpersonal skills. Only one problem...I need BOOKS!

I don't know if I can honestly say that all of my students love to read...as a reading teacher, I am hurt by this.

I can't even say for sure if they have copies of their own books at home. Being in a Title One school has many drawbacks because it means that a majority of our students receive free lunch and come from families with limited incomes. I want to be able to break that mold and provide my students with "oodles" of books to choose from. Right now, I don't have the funds to do that.

My Project

At any age, being in a book club teaches kids valuable skills-reading for understanding, relating reading to personal experience, how to participate in a discussion by taking turns and respecting the opinion of others. Having these book sets in my classroom will enable my students to truly get lost in a book without standardized tests looming-no comprehension questions to answer, just the pure satisfaction of reading for enjoyment. That is just what they need! These particular titles will also improve my students' understanding of Social Studies, which is an important part of our curriculum.

Book clubs are 'grown-up' and encourage students to form opinions about what they read, and express and support these opinions with peers.
