Oprah uses book clubs to get the world fired up about books and the discussions provide rich, thoughtful insights to the language and the literature. I want my students to have this same level of engagement and to know that books are fun and reading can be SOCIAL!
My students are in the 7th grade and are full of curiosity, humor, and determination.
We read a lot in class and outside of class and while they did not love this aspect of my curriculum in the fall, they now enjoy the experiences they are having with the books, with myself as a reader and with others in class when they get to talk about the books they love and even the books they don't like as much!
My Project
Students will participate in Book Clubs and Literature Circles to promote literacy and to enrich the experiences that come with sharing book reflections with peers. They will learn how to discuss books, ask questions of one another, investigate themes and common ideas, much like the kinds of social book club discussions that many adults enjoy.
My students need sets of books (Paperboy, Lincoln's Grave Robbers, Doll Bones-5 books in each set), so that we can run Book Clubs and Literature Circles. They need 9 titles for fiction and 5 titles for nonfiction. Through thoughtful discussions, my students will learn to look at books through various lenses and will be able to think about social issues from a variety of perspectives that might not have been present before. This kind of thinking and sharing will also provide a new depth of understanding to the writing about reading that students do in class.
Reading will help students to build vocabulary and improve confidence.
Sharing reading experiences with others will help foster a community of readers and allow students to make last connections with one another and with books!
