Book Bins

My students need book baskets to keep leveled readers and good fit books to read during independent and buddy reading time.

My Students

What were the kinds of activities you did when you got home from school? Did you read books in the afternoon or over the summer? Many of my students head home into a farming community where they are needed to help with younger siblings and household chores instead of having time to "just be kids."

Teaching in a rural farming community in South Carolina means that I encounter students from a variety of backgrounds each and every day.

Some of my students are from long-standing members of the community with adequate resources to meet their needs, physically and educationally. However, many students are from families who work in the farming industry and other skilled jobs. Families in the town in which my students live work hard to meet basic needs, and often have difficulty with that. There is a large, transient migrant population of students with little to no command of English who move in and out of our school system. Many students in my classroom are in the guardianship of grandparents or other relatives and several have active files in the county Department of Social Services office. Though these students do not have a wealth of physical resources, they are bright, vivacious children who love to learn and enjoy new experiences.

My Project

Research continually shows that the number one key factor for reading success is exposure to varied texts. Many of the students in my classroom do not live in a print-rich environment...they may not have books at all at home. It is imperative that they learn to experience the world through books that have a variety of cultural, social, and informational perspectives. One way I'd like to provide varied text to my students is by creating book baskets for each child with individual "good-fit" books. These are books students can read during independent reading time and buddy reading time. By providing these book baskets I've requested, we can provide experiences for my students, opening doors for them to reading fluency and expanding vocabulary as well as increasing confidence in their reading.

"The more you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" Please help us create a love for reading in students as well as increase their confidence by providing individual book baskets for each student with "good-fit" books inside.
