Blooming Botanists!

My students need botany kits to learn, such as TickleMe Classroom Kit, EarthBox Elementary School Support, Basic Plant Kingdom Survey Set and Discovering Plant Cells unit to get hands-on biology classes. My students need to investigate that organisms are made of cells and have traits that play a vital role in the organism’s ability to survive and thrive in its environment.

My Students

Let’s “PLANT” new knowledge and “GROW” mastery in my FUTURE BOTANISTS through active learning: investigating, creating, drawing, labeling, debating, designing, classifying, and so much more with plant cells, parts, and classification!

I teach a Fifth Grade inclusion classroom in a Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade Title I elementary school in Virginia that has not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive years in Reading and is also in Year 2 Title I School Improvement.

My classroom is made up of one ELL student and 4 students who have been identified with special needs. My students range in age from 10 to 12 years-old. The greater part of my class learns best through visual and kinesthetic teaching and learning. My students come to school from very economically disadvantaged homes; 86% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of my students are from military families with several students having at least one active duty military parent. One student has a parent who is incarcerated and has been placed in the care of the grandparents.

My Project

My students need botany kits to learn, such as TickleMe Classroom Kit, EarthBox Elementary School Support, Basic Plant Kingdom Survey Set and Discovering Plant Cells unit to get hands-on biology classes. My students need to investigate that organisms are made of cells and have traits that play a vital role in the organism’s ability to survive and thrive in its environment. If we receive plants from both classifications and to grow a class garden, it would make an EX-CELL-LENT impact on their level of engagement and achievement. With the utilization of materials like cell charts/models and microscope slides, students will draw, label, and describe the essential structures of plant or animal cells and their functions. Comparing and contrasting plant and animal cells will also be a part of the learning process with these materials. Students will design and build an edible plant or animal cell model from a variety of given materials and construct a key to identify each structure of the cell in order to build upon and extend their knowledge. Planting, growing and observing our own garden in the classroom will allow students to group organisms into categories, using their characteristics; living things (kingdoms) and plants (vascular or nonvascular) and name, identify, and describe two common examples of each group.

My Fifth Grade scientists will assume the role of a botanist to group organisms into categories, using their characteristics (vascular & nonvascular), compare and contrast the traits of groups of organisms, and explain how they survive in their environment.

Students will explore the career of a microscopic biologist by drawing, labeling, and describing the structures and functions of plant and animal cells. My future scientists will also design an investigation to make observations of cells. These are job skills that will help them grow into responsible citizens.
