We all learn in different ways and at different paces, but a traditional classroom doesn't always support the unique needs of students. Using technology in the classroom can help - not only in personalizing their learning, but teaching them important skills for the modern world.
Our school includes fifth-twelfth grade, and my fifth grade students come from all over the city - with a variety of backgrounds and abilities.
Each student is eager to learn and succeed, but with such a diverse classroom, they need to be challenged at different levels.
Some students are quickly overwhelmed and discouraged by trying to catch up to the state standards, while other students may become bored in constantly reviewing material that they have already mastered. A medium level pace is not the answer. This project will support our fifth grade Math and Foreign Language teachers to allow students to work on the skills they need.
My Project
Recently, I was able to implement a blended learning pilot for a few weeks in my classroom. Students were able to work at their own pace, receive quick feedback on digital assignments, and had more small group time with their teacher. I watched students succeed at new levels and try harder on their work than they had before.
I'd like to implement this style of teaching - blended learning - for the whole year with a station-rotation model. However, our access to technology was limited for the pilot. Students need consistent laptop availability in order to implement blended learning effectively.
I have requested five Chromebook laptops and a Chromebook storage tub that would be shared between the fifth grade Math and Foreign Language teachers so that students could consistently have access to a laptop station.
A small group of students would work on engaging and interactive digital assignments on laptops while other students worked on collaborative activities. This allows the teacher to work with small groups and give direct support as needed.
Having access to a consistent laptop station will allow students to work at their own pace and develop the skills they need at the level they need it.
They will be encouraged by being able to succeed and to take responsibility for their own learning. This will foster independent and lifelong learners.
