Do you remember when you were in school and art was a regular part of education? You may have even had a regular art teacher. While this may no longer be the case - we can offer kids an amazing art opportunity in the regular classroom setting.
Our school has a very diverse population both economically and culturally.
We are low income Title 1 school and serve over 400 students in grades K-5. In our district we no longer have PE, music or art teachers. We are able to keep music and PE alive easily, but art requires resources that are not provided. My teaching partner and I want to keep art alive in our classrooms.
My Project
At our school there is a kiln that is rarely used. My teaching partner and I are planning multiple lessons in art, with clay being one of our monthly mediums. We would like to start out our year with a unit on predatory birds in which we go on a field trip to the raptor center and then create pinch pot birds of prey. Each month will have a theme and the students will create clay projects to go with these themes. Some other examples are: main characters from books, ceramics that are reminiscent of a countries art, self-portrait tiles (Andy Warhol style) and plant art to go with science unit to name just a few ideas. The different color clays, glazes and tools will last both our classes all year and create amazing hands-on projects.
We found this year, having hands-on art lessons especially with the clay medium helped many of our kids connect and use their artistic or kinesthetic intelligence.
Art is an outlet for many of our toughest students. They can create things and express themselves where words can not reach. Our students light up when we start art projects. With your help we can provide a fun safe way to express themselves.
