Presently, I am limited in the number of microscopes and cell slides in my classroom. The motic digital screen microscope will allow cooperative groups to view and discuss slides. This microscope will facilitate instruction and engage a larger number of students in the learning process.
My school is located in a wonderful town in south Louisiana.
We are not a wealthy school and depend on grants or donations for tools in technology or materials to enhance instruction. My classroom is very diversified in representation, students range from very low levels of poverty to upper middle class families. Most families are single parents working hard to support their children. Most homes do not have access to technology or the Internet. In my classroom, diversity of students is accepted and respect for individual style is positively promoted.
My Project
I am an End-of-Course (EOC) teacher working very hard for my students to understand the new curriculum to pass their high stakes test. The digital microscope will allow a group of students to work cooperatively and view the same slide, then as a team analyze and distinguish the contents of the cell, (such as the fluids the cell is composed in, the microscopic "organs "of the cell, and cell boundaries). The mastery of this activity is pivotal to passing the EOC exam.
With the implementation of Common Core, utilization of the digital microscope will be pivotal to several units in biology, beginning with identifying and labeling plant and animal cells and ending with diseases that affect the body. My classes will further advance to complex topics of analyzing cell structures and translating it into text what they discover. Further, the student must support their finding with documented evidence. In discovery activities, the students' findings may support or refute previous accounts.
The motic digital screen microscope will have a strong impact in my instruction and the ability to engage students in cooperative groups.
Students working together to analyze, interpret, and transfer knowledge and information meets the goals of 21st century skills. A mission I will continually strive towards and achieve.
