Ms. C. from DC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My 25 students need a class set of the non-fiction book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". This will create a bridge between science, philosophy, and writing.

A typical day in my classroom begins with silent reading to prepare students for the topics that will be discussed. Students will receive direct instruction, work in groups, work independently, and then if time permits have time to do a "Genius" assignment.
My students are incredible, bright, and wonderful residents of the N.E.
quadrant of the District of Columbia. They attend our charter school in Trinidad, one the most economically depressed areas in the city. 90% of the students live below the poverty line.
As we explore, the human body, genetics, and public health, students will be able to discuss the ethical side of medicine and how policy and economics affect certain populations. We will move through the scientific content, while simultaneously reading the book the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The book will serve as an anchor text for our bioethical and philosophical discussions. Each week we will have a reader circle where students will discuss the chapter, and debate topics associated with the content and the book.
My students rarely have the opportunity to integrate subject matter, and most of the time they learn content in "vacuums." Often they are beholden to tests and their scores.
This will provide a real opportunity for authentic interdisciplinary study, real world science, and debates.
