Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students would understand the sentiment that acclaimed poet Maya Angelou relates, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." They burst with stories at every turn. Now they need to learn how to write them down.
Unfortunately, writing frequently falls by the wayside in the Bilingual Teacher's quest for literacy in two languages.
Supporting students to maintain a good pace in their reading development sometimes comes at the expense of the fundamentals of their writing development. Of course, the short term benefits of faster reading can come back to haunt my 2nd graders when they are faced with multi-page research essays before they even hit university. My job is to make sure that reading and writing development complement each other as each domain grows.
My Project
Introducing beginning writers to good writing requires a lot of step-by-step work. After I model the lesson on chart paper or the whiteboard, my students will be able to personally interact with the writing skills using the easel as a writing tool and the chart paper hanging from the easel as a reference for their work. With the journals, my students will build the capacity to not only recognize and read words with comprehension, but familiarize themselves with the process of using good vocabulary in their sentences. These materials will provide structure for student growth in an area that frequently seems bewildering for many students.
Good writing will help my students in a very specific way, but also in their general development as literate citizens.
As for the specific example, universities require good writing skills of their students. If my 2nd graders want to attend university, they must develop their writing craft. More generally, if my students can using writing to communicate effectively to all manner of people over diverse channels of communication, the doors of opportunity will be open to them forever.
