Better To Save Than To Be Sorry

My students need 68 USB flash drives.

Fayetteville, NC Grades 9-12

I am a high school computer applications (Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, Publisher and Web Page Design) teacher. I teach students from grades 9-12. Some who are academically gifted and some who are academically challenged. I also teach many students who are from low income homes.

Students need to understand the importance of saving/backing up all their files. Our computers have CPUs that do not have burners. Thus, there is no way for students to back up their work. Students access their files through the Intranet. If the Intranet goes down or if dumped, students either cannot access their files or all work is lost. To date, to learn different ways to save files, students do Internet research and create a presentation and a flyer. They then use these to teach their peers. As we know, there is no substitute for hands on experience. To minimize the spread of viruses, our school system does not allow students to use their personal storage devices in class. If my students are working on a document/project in class, they cannot take it home or to the library to complete. There is no sense of the importance of making back ups of files or storage device mobility which is something they will have to learn to do if in college or the work force. I used to be surprised how many students did not know how to save a document to the hard drive. Then I became surprised how many did not know what a USB was or how to save to one.

I am requesting one USB flash drive per student. The drives will remain in class. Students will, however, be allowed to take them home if needed. All work in class will be backed up giving students hands on experiences. If the Intranet goes down, class can go on because they will have access to their classwork. USB drives will be cleared and recycled each semester/year. This gives all students, regardless of economic status, the opportunity to experience the use of a USB flash drive and its importance.

Students who want and need to learn the importance of saving, backing up and transporting files will have this opportunity. If a student needs to work on class work at home and cannot stay after school because no one can pick them if they do not take the bus or if they have to babysit a younger sibling because mom has to work, they will be afforded the opportunity. Your help will be greatly appreciated by both my students, the school and myself.
